Greetings and Welcome to Deneen School of Excellence

Thank you for visiting our school website. We hope your visit to our site will answer any questions you have about our wonderful school. We are located on the south side of Chicago in the Greater Grand Crossing community. Deneen is a third year turnaround Chicago public school that is managed by the Academy for Urban School Leadership (AUSL). We have 550 students in grades Pre-K through eighth. Over 98% of our students qualify for free/reduced lunch.

Our school is committed to providing a safe, orderly, caring, and supportive environment. Each student’s self-esteem is fostered by positive relationships with students and staff. We strive to have our parents, teachers, and community members actively involved on our students’ learning.

Our students not only have a strong academic experience, but also have opportunities to participate in our curricular enhancement programs. These programs include fine arts, performing arts, and athletics. We believe that these experiences are critical to the development of the full potential of our students. Therefore, we expect our students to take part in these opportunities.

The Deneen School of Excellence staff aims to create a challenging learning environment that encourages high expectations for success through developmentally-appropriate instruction that allows for individual differences and learning styles. Deneen is committed to providing academic and social excellence in a positive and supportive culture to produce productive citizens prepared for a global society.

At Deneen, we exemplify excellence every day!

Our History

Building on Our History to
Create a Culture of Excellence

charles-s-deneen.jpg

Deneen School of Excellence is named in honor of Charles S. Deneen (1863-1940) who was an Illinois Governor (1905-1913) and U.S. Senator (1925-1931). Deneen also served as a member of the Illinois House of Representatives in 1892. He had also been the lead prosecutor in Chicago’s infamous Adolph Luetgert murder trial.

Deneen School of Excellence opened in in 1954. The building originally contained 13 classrooms; 6 classrooms were added in 1959 and an additional 10 classrooms were added in 1963.

The building was renovated in 1995 and a new, fully accessible, main entrance, office, cafeteria, and additional classrooms were added.

Today, the building contains 33 classrooms and serves 550 students.

AUSL

AUSL (Academy for Urban School Leadership) is a Chicago nonprofit school management organization that creates schools of excellence by developing highly effective teachers and transforming educational outcomes for students in the lowest performing schools.

Chicago Public Schools (CPS) turned over management of Deneen School of Excellence to AUSL in 2010 as a turnaround school. Turning around a school is one approach that CPS uses to improve neighborhood schools that have been failing for many years. The transformation begins with the new leadership and teachers in the building to deliver effective instruction and the right climate and culture to the same neighborhood students.

AUSL is committed to to providing all AUSL students with a quality education to prepare them for college and career.
